TOKYO:  In a world first, Japanese voters have elected a robot as their new Prime Minister. Known only as “Asimo”, the new leader cannot talk, write, understand Japanese or English, and according to his aides, cannot respond to any specific commands.

The news of Asimo’s shock win was met initially with surprise by Western leaders as well as China, and it is understood that several leaders attempted to call the robotic PM-elect but were told by the operator that he was unable to compute spoken communication and hence the call would be a ‘complete waste of time.’ Instead they were told to send congratulatory RAM to the new PM in the mail.

The Diet, Japan’s bicameral legislature, gave a 15 minute standing ovation as PM Asimo stood at the podium before the Lower House of Parliament and entertained them with a short dance followed by a signature bow before the MP’s.

The Opposition DJP leader, Naoto Kan, however was not impressed by the new PM. ‘Asimo’s abilities are limited to dancing, bowing, pouring tea, shaking hands and [sometimes] waving,’ he said. ‘The Prime Minister is just a machine, nothing else – it is outrageous that anyone consider entrusting a machine with the future of our economy.’

Asimo’s campaigning manager Shinzu Kato refuted the Opposition leader’s claims describing Asimo as a ‘charismatic and intelligent’ leader who the public ‘adored’.

‘He’s the kind of leader that the Japanese people are looking for,’ he said on Japan TV. ‘They love him, especially his youthful, charismatic persona. He loves to dance and show off. The children find him hillarious!’

His first foreign trip as new PM will be to the Honda headquarters where he will undergo routine maintainence and a sound card transplant.
